a)  Go to the link: https://www.mathgoodies.com/lessons/vol7/expressions on “Writing Algebraic Expressions” and answer:

  • I)   Read the examples (problems with solutions) on “Writing Algebraic Expressions” and do the exercises at the bottom.
  • II)   Write in algebraic language:   “Seven times a number, increased by four”.
  • III)   Jenny earns 60 € a day working at a shop. Write an algebraic expression to represent the amount of money she will earn in d days.

b)  Go to the link:    http://www.mathgoodies.com/lessons/vol7/equations.html on “Writing Algebraic Equations” and answer:

  • I)   Read the examples (problems with solutions) on “Writing Algebraic Equations” and do the exercises at the bottom.
  • II)   Write in algebraic language:   “Four plus three times a number is ten”.
  • III)   Write in algebraic language:   “Ten is ninety divided by the sum of a number and four”.
  • IV)   Eric had some money and then he earned 10 €. Now he has 15 €. Write the equation.

c)  We have 4 trays of eggs and 3 eggs.

In total we have 19 eggs.

Both trays have an equal number of eggs.

To calculate the number of eggs in a tray we write the equation:  4x + 3 = 19

  • I)  Solve for x to calculate the number of eggs per tray.
  • II) If we have 3 trays and 4 eggs, and in total we have 40 eggs, what is the number of eggs per tray?

d)  We have 5 bags of sweets and 2 sweets.

In total we have 42 sweets.

All bags have an equal number of sweets.

  1. I) Write the equation.
  2. II) Solve for x to calculate the number of sweets per bag.
  3. III) If we have 6 bags and 1 sweet, and in total we have 73 sweets, what is the number of sweets per bag?

e)  Sally has one full bag of sweets and two extra sweets. In total she has 24 sweets. How many sweets are there in each bag?

f)  John spends one fourth of his money on going to the cinema, 5 euros on sandwiches and he still has 3€.

  • I) Write the equation.
  • II) Solve for x to calculate how much money John had at the beginning.
  • II) If after going to the cinema and buying the sandwiches he still has 1.5 €, how much money did John have at the beginning?
