• I)  Why is the first digit an “8”?
• II)  Why is the third digit a “5”?
• III)  What is the unit of measurement? (Note: it is written under the five dials)

“all right! We are reading an electric meter. And this is the electric meter on the side of my house.

And you read the dials from left to right.

You always look at where the needles are pointing, and you always go with the lowest number. So you see this needle over here, on the far left, that is just passed the eight, is between the eight and the nine, so we call it oneeight.

The next needle, right here, is right between four and five, so you always go with the lowest number, call that a four.

Now the next needle looks that it is right directly on the six, it is the one on the middle. Looks like it is right on the six, so what do you call that? But you look to the next dial on the right, that would be this one. Notice how it’s between nine and zero, it hasn’t passed zero yet. Well this needle in the centre is not gonna be on six until the needle to the right of it passes zero.

And so we are gonna call that needle there five …”
